Glaciers and views and the number of adventures you can have all make north of Pakistan an attractive place for tourism. Pakistan Government is taking the initiative to promote eco-tourism in Pakistan to cope with issues like pollution, littering, use of plastic, etc.
Issues and Challenges:
An increase in tourism means every industry in the area and the state will earn boosted revenue. From worldwide, Pakistan receives around a billion tourists, and the number has increased to 13% from 2012 to 2019.
We have all heard the news this July when around 7 Lac people reach Naran Kaghan for celebrations for Eid. The number of vehicles in Murree and galliat was 14500 while the beautiful hill station receives approximately 20 to 25 thousand tourists monthly.
While all these numbers paint a beautiful portrayal of Pakistan’s future tourism, tourists and travelers have specific duties to keep the beauty of these places, and we all know the term as ecotourism. Here are issues which local people and nature is facing:
- With increasing tourists, the Saif ul Malook Jheel and visiting spots in Swat and Kaghan are filled with litter.
- The social media of Hunza residents appealing to tourists to do not litter plastic bottles and other junk has been viral a few years back. Likewise, a picture of people who wrote on roads went viral. The local found the culprits and then made them clean the mess after few days was quite a viral couple of months back.
- With the increasing number of tourists, forests are cutting rapidly for new hotels and resorts. Moreover, tourists leave junk like wrappers, plastic bottles, etc. You will find few areas with garbage heaps and nasty smells.
- Do not go that far, many people go hiking on Margalla hills of Damn-e-koh every day, and the track is filled with litter. Plastic water disposal has become dangerous for wildlife in the hills. The tweet of a British ambassador about the nasty condition of tracks started a cleaning drive-by administration.
The sad reality is that domestic tourists have a crude habit of littering anywhere and damaging the environment wherever they go, and it has to be changed to preserve the beauty of the place.
Ecotourism
Ecotourism means adapting the way and set of rules to visit places without damaging their beauty and threatening the area’s wildlife. Ecotourism is a sustainable way of promoting tourism in Pakistan. As the world battles with climate change and danger to natural beauty, there is a need to encourage eco-friendly approaches to maintain the sanctity of land and livelihoods.
Benefits of ecotourism policies in Pakistan:
Here is the list of few ecotourism policies in Pakistan which can be helpful in a boost of tourism in the country while promoting the industry and without damaging nature in the process. So let’s get started:
·Ecotourism policies for cultural Industry:
The ecotourism policies for the cultural industry in Pakistan need in every region and area, which receives hundreds of tourists every day. In areas worldwide, it has been observed that tourism damages the region’s culture and norms.
The efforts should be made to keep the regional norms intact while letting tourists experience the beauty of the culture. Government can launch video ads and campaigns for dos and don’ts while exploring region culture.
·Policies for dos and don’ts:
It is a need of time to introduce and implement the policies of do’s and don’ts like fine for improper actions like painting trees, cutting trees, littering, and hunting animals for ecotourism. Hunting should be restricted or banned for the rare wildlife creatures to preserve their beauty.
·Launch awareness campaigns:
It is compulsory to need awareness campaigns regarding visiting any popular tourist place. Vlogger and YouTubers can be of great help to promote awareness campaigns.

·Policies for hospitality:
Trees are one of the reasons for the beauty of northern areas, which are shrinking fast by the increasing number of hotels and resorts. The alarming increase without proper authority governing the rapid change can bring a drastic change in the climate and beauty of the area.
As people travel, there is an increase in demand for rooms and satisfy the local construct’s requirements without considering natural biodiversity. The ecotourism policy for the hospitality industry is crucial in this aspect.
The encroachments can affect the environment, and state regulatory authorities can monitor and stop any real estate development against the environment. To make real estate activity sustainable, a study and survey of different areas should be conducted, and
the region should be divided into zones according to the construction activities.
The regulatory authority will ensure that every construction complies with the laws, and any breach will cause penalties and punishments.
Status of ecotourism in Pakistan:
The PTI government has been trying to promote ecotourism in the region for more than a decade now. With the alarming increase in glacier melting and climate changes, strict measures are taken. Here are few steps regarding ecotourism policies in Pakistan:
- There are measures taken like an anti-encroachment drive in Kaghan Valley and ceasing the use of plastic in Hunza.
- The incumbent government has also launched the ‘one billion Tree Tsunami Initiative,’ which slowly but successfully.
- The government is also set to introduce steps and measures to offset the effects of environmental degradation, and millions of funds are allocated for the purpose.
Let’s wrap it up:
The country is experiencing a significant tourism push, and there is still a big gap between ecotourism policies and tourism. There is a need to come up with the policies and implement them effectively. The number of tourists is increasing every year, and there should be a continuous set of measures taken for sustainable tourism by bringing innovative reforms.
